About Summit, NJ

Summit sits on a ridge in Union County, roughly in the northwest corner of the county. It earned the nickname “Hill City” from its position along the Second Watchung Mountain range. The name Summit itself traces back to the Morris and Essex Railroad, which was routed over what locals called “The Summit” hill in 1837. That railroad line is now part of NJ Transit’s Morris and Essex Lines, still one of the most-used commuter routes in the state.

The city was incorporated as a township in 1869 and formally became the City of Summit on April 11, 1899. Before incorporation, the area was known by several names — including “Turkey Hill” during the colonial period and “Heights over Springfield” in the decades following the Revolutionary War.

Summit’s downtown district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Carter House, built in 1741, is the city’s oldest known standing structure. The Summit Diner on Summit Avenue has been in operation since 1938 and is widely cited as the oldest continuously operating diner in New Jersey.

After the Civil War, Summit became a summer resort destination for wealthy New Yorkers attracted to its clean air and proximity to Manhattan. That legacy shaped the residential and commercial character of the city, which today has a population of roughly 22,700 and a thriving downtown corridor along Springfield Avenue.
